Backcountry Jeep and Canoe Safari
Get your fill of action and adventure on the Backcountry Jeep and Canoe Safari. This Ketchikan tour puts you in the driver's seat for a 4x4 adventure through the lush Tongass National Forest. Your guides lead the way and communicate via 2-way radio as you wind your Jeep Wrangler through forested Sitka spruce and western hemlock laden trails on this off-road adventure. Make your way to Lake Harriet Hunt where you'll paddle a 20-passenger canoe through one of the most scenic ecosystems in the world. A surf & turf adventure through the lush Alaskan rainforest!
Jump behind the wheel of an off-road vehicle to explore Alaskan backcountry from a rugged Jeep Wrangler. With the unique ability to cover lots of ground in a short amount of time, venture off onto abandoned logging roads winding through the wilderness of Revillagigedo Island. Set off away from the crowds through the Alaskan wilderness in your 4-passenger Jeep while taking turns driving. Guides lead the pack and communicate through the vehicles' radio, while stops along the way at scenic overlooks provide photo opportunities and a chance to switch drivers. Cruise through old-growth forests and arrive to Lake Harriet Hunt where part 2 of this exciting adventure begins.
Say goodbye to the Jeeps and hello to sturdy 37-foot canoe that will allow you to experience the rainforest from a different perspective. Again, professional guides lead the group and provide an informative narrative along the way. Head ashore to the cook camp where a tasty snack of smoked salmon, clam chowder and assorted rolls with wilderness jams await. Fuel up for a final nature walk that completes this comprehensive journey. You'll return to the cruise docks having experienced Ketchikan by Jeep, canoe, and nature trail! And at 4 hours duration, you'll still have time in the day for exploring downtown!
Mendenhall Glacier Paddle & Hike
Tour Update: This trip will spend time exploring the glacier up close and hiking around the edges of it safely from the bedrock. For safety reasons, this tour no longer takes guests on the glacier.
While many tours include glacier views from a distance, this one actually lets you step right up to the Mendenhall Glacier and experience this frozen world first-hand. Paddle across the lake with your professional guide and approach the massive face of Mendenhall Glacier before leaving the canoe behind for a guided hike. Starting in 2016, permits began allowing guided trips like this up to Mendenhall, so don't miss this opportunity to experience the glacier up close and personal!
Pick-up from the cruise docks and many Juneau hotels is included and from there a short ride over to Mendenhall Lake allows time to get properly fitted for gear and equipment. Cast off, following along while the guide paints an informative backdrop of the ancient geological formations comprising your view. Calmly coast among floating icebergs and glide along shorelines, keeping your eyes peeled for river otters, porcupines, beavers, bald eagles and even black bear all known to inhabit this area.
The paddle portion culminates at the glacier's edge where you'll step on land and continue this adventure by foot. A 1-2 hour hike takes you up to the glacier to explore the breakthtaking landscape. All the while, your guide is providing insights into the area and with a maximum of 6 guests per guide, you'll enjoy the intimacy of this smaller tour. Downtown Juneau will seem like a world away. Eventually, return to the canoe and retrace the journey, and enjoy all that this multi-sport activity has to offer. Experience Alaska on a self-propelled wilderness excursion leaving crowds and motors behind.
For the same glacier experience but with a hike around the lake instead of canoeing across it, check out the Mendenhall Glacier Hike.
Glacier Point Wilderness Safari
This popular Skagway tour has a little bit of everything: a catamaran cruise, rainforest hike, and a scenic canoe journey that culminates with an up-close view of Davidson Glacier! This Glacier Point Wilderness Safari is one of the most positively-reviewed excursions and is the only tour in Skagway that ventures this close to a glacier without a helicopter! Journey to a truly remote wilderness setting surrounded by awe-inspiring beauty. Its exclusivity means limited seating and only a couple departures daily, so advanced reservations are highly recommended.
The adventure starts with a 45-minute boat ride on a custom-designed catamaran with an enclosed cabin through the Lynn Canal, North America's longest and deepest fjord. This boat ride provides a whole new perspective on the area: slightly different than you will see from the cruise deck and it's common to see whales and seals along the way. Your naturalist guide provides a wealth of information as you cruise by cascading waterfalls originating from high mountain glaciers. Upon arrival at the secluded Glacier Point beach, a short bus ride takes you to base camp. From there, gear up for a ¼ mile walk where suddenly the rainforest opens up to showcase Davidson Glacier in its majestic beauty.
You'll board a motor-assisted 31-foot voyager canoe to journey towards the glacier. How close you get to the glacier depends on the weather and lake conditions, so while we can't guarantee that you'll be able to get out of the canoe and walk right up to the glacier, rest assured you'll have spectacular views either way. Return to Glacier Point for a picnic lunch on the beach and soak in those last moments of this special wilderness area before the return boat trip back to Skagway.
