About Icy Strait Point
Three names come up on every Hoonah-area itinerary, and they are not the same place. Icy Strait is the body of water: the channel between Chichagof Island and the mainland that links Cross Sound to Chatham Strait and Lynn Canal. Its tide-fed feeding grounds, including Point Adolphus, are why this is one of the most reliable places in Alaska to see humpback whales. Icy Strait Point is the cruise port: a privately owned destination on Port Frederick, an inlet off Icy Strait, built around a restored 1912 salmon cannery and owned by Huna Totem Corporation, the Alaska Native corporation of the Huna Tlingit. Hoonah is the town: Alaska's largest Tlingit village, home to about 900 year-round residents, a mile and a half along the shore from the docks on the northeast coast of Chichagof Island, roughly 35 miles west of Juneau. The port welcomed its first ship in 2004 and now has two docks, Adventure Landing beside the cannery and Wilderness Landing a short gondola ride away. Nearly everyone who visits arrives by cruise ship, though you can also fly into Hoonah from Juneau or come by state ferry. The grounds are compact and walkable: the cannery museum, forest trails, waterfront restaurants serving local seafood, and the port's own attractions such as Tlingit dance performances and the mountaintop gondola with views across Icy Strait toward Glacier Bay National Park. Its stewardship of the site earned Icy Strait Point the Seatrade Cruise Award for Port of the Year in 2020. Our Icy Strait Point excursions are independent, locally run tours that meet you at the port and head out into the country around it: whale watching on Icy Strait, brown bear viewing on Chichagof Island, kayaking on Port Frederick, and wildlife drives through Hoonah with local guides. They are separate from the attractions sold at the port, so you can book on your own schedule and still be back at the docks with time to explore the cannery and the town.
