Join a float plane tour for a bird's eye view of Ketchikan, and soar over Tongass Narrows on the way out to the George Inlet Lodge for a sit-down crab meal in a picturesque and remote Alaskan setting. A truly Alaskan experience from start to finish, you can mark 2 activities off your bucket list: a seaplane tour topped off with fresh, Alaskan seafood!

What to expect and what not to expect with this Ketchikan shore excursion

With dock-to-dock transportation included, a short ride from your cruise ship takes you over to the float plane base area, where you will meet your pilot-guide and receive a short video orientation to prepare for the flight. If you've never been on a seaplane before (or even if you have), you'll find the water take-off exhilarating as the pilot navigates out into the open waters, brings it up to speed and lifts the pontoons out of the water. You can begin to understand this diverse landscape from the air: a plethora of islands, inlets and seemingly endless lush forests as far as the eye can see.

  • A scenic float plane tour to a remote, historic Lodge
  • All-you-can-eat Dungeness crab meal
  • Relax and enjoy the George Inlet Fjord surrounding the Lodge
  • 3 hours duration dock-to-dock

The approximate 25-minute flight will take you to the far reaches of Revillagigedo Island, over breathtaking peaks with deep glacial fjords below. Then prepare for landing as the pilot brings down the plane right into the crisp waters of George Inlet Fjord and navigates right up to the dock of the George Inlet Lodge, a historic outpost situated in a surreal landscape. Your host will greet you and invite you in for appetizers and Alaskan beer or white wine next to the fireplace, while the last touches are put on the main course.

Start with a fresh romaine salad adorned with mandarin oranges with a homemade oriental dressing. And soon to follow is a streaming plate of Dungeness crab paired with clarified butter and baby red potatoes - a staple Alaskan meal with fresh crab from local Alaskan waters. Save room for a smooth cheesecake smothered with Alaskan blueberries. Relax and enjoy the surrounding scenery, chat with friends and make new ones before returning back to the cruise docks via vehicle.

You've got questions, we've got answers
Q:Will we make it back to the ship in time? What if we don't?
We've never left anyone behind and only schedule tours that work well with your cruise ship's itinerary. We leave plenty of cushion so you can confidently book your trips independently.
Q:Do the flights ever get canceled due to weather?
Yes, safety is a number one priority, so weather conditions are taken into account each day. In certain cases, the weather can lift and a slight delay will still allow the flight to continue. However, if a flight is canceled completely due to weather circumstances, you will always receive a full refund.
Q:What if our ship is delayed or doesn't make it into port? Refund?
It's very rare that a ship is delayed into port, but in those cases, we will try our best to work with you to reschedule the tour to a later time. If that is not a possibility or your ship doesn't make it into port, we will of course refund the full cost of the tour.
Q:What should we wear and bring?
For comfort, we typically recommend long pants, closed-toed shoes and a jacket, as the air temperature will be a few degrees cooler than the ground temperature. Since there is an opportunity to get out of the plane, a rain jacket is advisable as well.
Q:Can you see wildlife from the plane?
If you have sharp eyes, it's certainly possible to see wildlife on the mountains below. The plane flies low enough to distinguish individual animals, but of course the pilots have to respect local wildlife so it's not an objective of this tour.
Q:How big are the planes?
There are a few types of planes used for the tour, and you'll typically be in a group of 6-10 guests on the flight. Everyone gets a window seat on these flights.
